Tips for Saving On Home Heating Expenses

Fall is a favorite season to many; it means football, pumpkins, comfy sweatshirts and beautiful landscape as leaves turn red, orange and yellow. However, fall also brings with it cool crisp air – all too quickly followed by cold air and snow. As temperatures drop your heating bills soar. From October through March, depending on what part of the country you live in, you can expect to crank up the heat in order to keep your home toasty warm.

Like all of us, we’re looking to save a dollar where we can, which includes on our home heating bills. We’ve compiled a list of tips you can incorporate into your home and daily routine in order to increase your savings, decrease that electric bill, and make your home slightly more energy efficient.

#1 Adjust the Thermostat – When you are home set your thermostat as low as is comfortable. When you’re out of the house, turn your thermostat back 10° to 15° for eight hours and save around 10% a year on your heating bill.

#2 Sunsational – Open the curtains on your south-facing windows to bring free heat into your home. Close your window coverings when the sun goes down to keep the heat inside.

#3 Ceiling Fans – Homes that have better ventilation and airflow can be more energy efficient in the summer and winter months. Turn the fans on clockwise in the winter to keep your rooms warmer by gently pushing hot air down.

#4 Warm Toes – Add area rugs over solid flooring or even on top of carpeting. The layered affect will not only look luxurious but the rugs will absorb the heat and keep your feet warm.

#5 Maintenance – Keeping your furnace and vents properly maintained will reduce energy consumption and help you save.
